Melamine is a product that is used in cafes, restaurants and catering in front of house service. Most people will remember melamine plates that we had for our children. Often used for children as they are tough and hard wearing.
Melamine is a type of plastic and while not considered toxic unless ingested. It’s certainly not recommended to heat food on Melamine especially in the Microwave.
But do not be totally alarmed if you are served food on a melamine plate, it is totally safe with new interesting and amazing shapes which are improved for the hospitality industry.
Eliminating Plastics or Melamine from our Kitchens is quite simple. While this product is not recyclable. It should be replaced with Glass or Ceramics. If you are looking for a non breakable option for picnics and outings try our Palm leaf plates which are totally disposable but made from the palm frond. These totally break down and are great compost.
